Go to the most beautiful natural place you know.  It needs to contain plants and animals.  You will need to concentrate, so sit or stand or walk, whatever helps you to concentrate.  You will also need to be able to empty your mind, so if you find this hard to do while walking, stop.

The Death Lodge

A couple of days ago Moongazy lent me a copy of a handbook called The Wilderness Quest; For Vision and Self-healing by Dr Stephen Foster and Meredith Little. It’s an extraordinary little book, quite different from any “self help” or “spiritual” books I’ve flicked through before. It takes the reader, in very concrete and specific steps, through the preparation for a Vision Quest. None of the usual vagueness that one finds in most spiritual advice.

Living in the Truth: some practical steps

1. Be ready to welcome beauty.

Beauty is the human perception of rightness. It is an unconscious reference to the Truth that we all know, but have forgotten. To find something beautiful is to recognise that it is without conflict, that it is simple, and thus that it is in some way right. Every encounter with beauty is an opportunity to learn some aspect of the Truth.

Flesh and Illusion
